Chihuahuan Desert & Star Party

Forgot to post this one, on Friday we went to the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute.  Took a
rough hike down into a nice canyon.  Amazing how trees can grow in such a dry place.  Then
walked through their botanical garden which had most of the trees (not much taller than our
bushes) and cacti labeled.  After that we walked through their greenhouse and saw a huge variety
of local cacti, with some of them blooming.  Their was also a historical display set up over the
Happy Jack mine.  It sure was a lot of hard work to bring up a ton of rock ore for only a few ounces of minerals.
That night we drove up to the McDonald Observatory for the Star Party.  They had 7
telescopes set up for us, the largest being a 20" mirror telescope.  We were able to view the moon,
Jupiter, Venus, the Pleiades Nebula, and other stars.  It was windy and cold but worth the drive.
